A recent, ground-breaking collaboration between the UAE’s Al Ghadeer Foundation and the world-renowned luxury Italian jeweller Damiani has served to raise the profile of the UAE’s female artisans, representing a tangible result of the growing international recognition for the UAE’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.
The Al Ghadeer Foundation was established in 2006, in large part due to the efforts of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, Assistant to the President of the UAE Red Crescent for Women’s Affairs. The aim of the Foundation is to empower female Emirati artisans from low-income families by providing them with a sustainable source of revenue through the sale of traditional UAE handicrafts.
Created using materials and techniques passed down through the generations, these products capture the authentic spirit of Emirati heritage, yet they also incorporate creative modern accents.
By helping female Emirati artisans to market their creations, the Foundation also seeks to create and explore further opportunities for them in terms of income generation, in keeping with the economic, social and cultural objectives of the UAE.
Damiani is one of the most famous brands in the world of luxury. Established in 1924 in Valenza, the centre of the high jewellery industry in Italy, Damiani has been renowned for the splendour and precision of its handcrafted pieces for almost a century.
In recent years, Damiani's business has expanded into the Middle East, starting from the UAE, as a promising market full of opportunities and an important gateway to business in the region as a whole.
The cooperation between Al Ghadeer and Damiani is based on common values and ideals, as both rely on their artisanal heritage and long history of artistic traditions to inform their products. Similarly, the centrality of “family” is firmly rooted in both institutions – Emirati artistic techniques are characterised by their linear nature, being passed down from generation to generation, while Damiani also prides itself on being led by the descendants of the company’s founder, who was widely regarded as the “master of gem stones”.
The physical incarnation of this collaboration is the Infinita bracelet, born of a unique encounter of cultures and traditions – a melding of the heritage of the West with the East – at the hands of the legendary craftswomen of Abu Dhabi and the master goldsmiths of Valenza.
Meticulously designed to encapsulate the passion and warmth of the UAE’s traditional handicrafts, this stunning piece of jewellery has been created to symbolise the ability of artistic heritage to build bridges of convergence and reconciliation between people of different origins and countries. It also seeks to both represent and advance the progress and empowerment of Emirati women, and therefore takes as its literary form the words: “she is art; she is brave; she is Infinita”.
The Luxury Hive has played a pivotal role in identifying and cultivating the shared values of the partners, as well as in providing the opportunity to develop their collaboration from an initial concept to a reality by highlighting their common passions and objectives.
Al Ghadeer and Damiani formally announced their cooperation and the launch of the Infinita bracelet in the Al Fahidi historical district of Dubai. Famous for its vibrant and authentic character, the district’s unique heritage evolved through the influences of the many different people from around the world who have been welcomed by the UAE and granted the opportunity to enjoy a life of success, tolerance and love within its borders. The launch event was attended by HE Nicola Lener, Ambassador of Italy to the UAE, HE Saeed Al Naboodah, CEO of Culture and Heritage Sector at Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, and an eclectic collection of elite social figures and press representatives.
The Infinita bracelet was created to symbolise both the
unlimited capabilities and enduring resilience of women. It is a
piece born of an amalgamation of the most intricate traditional
Emirati embroidery with the exquisite aesthetics of Italian
craftsmanship, resulting in a dazzling interpretation of both
cultures and traditions. Infinita, therefore, is both a
testament to Emirati female empowerment and a tribute to their
role in preserving the priceless ancestral heritage of UAE.
She is Art. She is Brave. She is Infinita.
